Acording to Wikipidea: Voice of America (VOA) is an American international broadcaster funded by the United States Congress. It is the largest and the oldest U.S. funded international broadcaster.

But Is Voice of America Propaganda? It depends on who you ask; The United States Congress would disagree, as they are the ones funding it. But the Agenda-Setting News Campaign is run by the State Department, and if you don’t toe the line, you will be called out just As Mike Pompeo did while making a speech at the VOA headquarters.

Political infighting at the Headquarters

The political infighting occurred after writers seemingly started to get more frustrated, pushing pro-America propaganda while America is failing miserably internationally and domestically. It has become increasingly hard for the writers at VOA to say America is the greatest country on earth or even push the American exceptionalism facade with a straight face and still call themselves journalists.

Enter Mike Pompeo, United States Secretary of State, Clashed with Workers at Voice of America and let his displeasure of the staff known during a speech at VOA headquarters; Pompeo touted “American exceptionalism” criticized VOA for lack of positive administration coverage.

Mike Pompeo was quoted telling staff “It’s not fake news for you to broadcast that this is the greatest nation the world has ever known,” Pompeo said on the broadcast.

“I’m not saying ignore our faults. Acknowledge them. But this isn’t the Vice of America, focusing on everything that’s wrong with our great nation. It certainly isn’t the place to give authoritarian regimes in Beijing or Tehran a platform.”

Pro-Trump Leadership at VOA Moved to placate the Trump administration and Mike Pompeo

Michael Pack CEO of the U.S. Agency for Global Media (USAGM) under President Donald Trump. Pack assumed office in June 2020 after Senate confirmation

Michael Pack moved against descent at VOA: As USAGM CEO, Michael Pack accused VOA of “being rife with the anti-Trump sentiment.” He fired several VOA employees for producing news segments he disliked.

NPR, another government-sponsored media outlet reported, “editor that didn’t follow orders was suspended.” Pack’s senior aides “pushed for the network’s White House bureau chief to be sidelined, alleging a tilt toward Democrats, despite policies barring USAGM executives from interfering in coverage.”

Michael Pack has collaborated with Stephen Bannon, a former advisor for President Trump and co-founder of the right-wing conservative propaganda website Breitbart News. That would explain why the administration wanted to push for a more anti-China tone, which would be in line with America’s new foreign policy.

Voice of America journalists demand the resignation of top officials, protest sidelining of two staffers

“It is not out of order for VOA journalists to ask questions of U.S. government officials. It is our job,” the journalists wrote in a letter.

Pro-Trump director Michael Pack has come under fire after ordering the reassignment of journalist Patsy Widakuswara because she asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo about the recent deadly riots at the US Capitol.

Voice of America Is America’s MouthPiece?

Voice of America was founded as a tool for the U.S Government to speak directly to the foreign and domestic population to the extent that the U.S Government could sway or convince the viewers of America’s policy.

According to whitehouse.gov, Voice of America is a global news network funded by American taxpayers. It spends about $200 million each year on its mission to “tell America’s story” and “present the policies of the United States clearly and effectively” to people around the globe.

“VOA will represent America,” its guiding Charter reads. And for years after its founding during World War II.
